Dashing or jumping will cancel most actions, adding a layer of strategy to your brawls. Depending on the directional input, you can also perform different throws, and by throwing enemies at each other you'll knock them out of the way. Furthermore, if you throw them into the background, you can destroy objects that are normally out of reach. It's a great chance to obtain items!
